New focus
Some of you may follow me on facebook and saw my message about blowing our budget last month. I am a numbers girl and when I sat down to balance everything out I was shocked (and saddened) to see how bad things were.
The month before we had a big financial thing happen.... we paid off our house. It wasn't something that was easy but had been a goal for us for awhile. Before I quit working, during that year of 'trying' to see if we could make it on one salary we put my entire paychecks (minus giving) towards our mortgage and quickly whittled it down. So for a solid year we made probably three extra payments each month. It made a HUGE difference. It wasn't easy but our house is OURS now. It's a good feeling to know that if something would happen to Nathan or our income, we are not threatened with a payment hanging over our heads to keep the house... we should always have a roof over us now.... heating it may be another question. ha
But because of that I knew coming into December that we had some 'extra' wiggle room and didn't pay as close attention as I would have before. It really wasn't a good idea. I overspent. I made a mistake. But I only did it for one month, I've realized it, and now we are re-focusing for the new year. I honestly believe that every so often making mistakes are good and teachable moments - they help you to refocus and gain new traction in meeting your goals.
This year our goal is to pay off my student loans. To easily do that we would need to put each mortgage payment towards my loans each month. I said to 'easily' do that..... we also have a couple large expenses we are looking at that isn't going to make it easy. So I'm going to being pinching pennies... planning ahead better, and really watching every dollar that comes in and goes out. And I hope to blog soon on our budget and how that works in our house.
I hope and plan to blog more intensely on this and how we are doing each month. What are your goals for the coming year? Do you have big ones or small ones? Having a goal (no matter how big or small) is the first step towards making a change. :)
***My dear friend who tried to contact me in a comment the other day, because my blog is so basic I wasn't notified and not sure you were notified that I responded...... email me at njbish5 @ gmail (dot) com

Another Option
I'm really going to try and focus on sharing with you how we started down the path to me staying home and how we did that financially. It's not easy and there are many things we have to pass on or delay.
I've always had the money saving itch but once you start getting really good deals and seeing the numbers in black and white it really gives you more momentum to save more.
Christmas is coming up way too quickly for me and this is about the time I start my shopping. Often times when there are special deals out there you can customize almost all of them to someone in your life. Plus a couple dollars here and there makes it so much easier then cramming it all into December and then in January being totally stressed out over the amount of money you spent.
For instance - this travel mug, yes it's technically a coffee mug but what little kid doesn't love to feel like an adult - use it for ice water on a hot summer day and you've become the world's best mom! :)
Or customizing a t-shirt for Grandma or Grandpa? Or use this as a gag-gift for the company party. $6... not that much at all.
York Photos has some amazing deals going on right now - reusable grocery bags for free! You can turn those into so many options - music lesson bags, trick or treat bags, over night bags to friends, church bag, the options are endless.
Or a new apron for that special someone in your life :)
Or how about a pillowcase to help the transition into a new bed??? (Something I may think about for Miss Naomi)

Just a small annoyance
So I'll be honest about something else.
When my children combine all the wonderful and beautiful colors of Play-Doh 24-Pack of Colors that I bought for them within minutes of opening the new containers it drives me crazy! Absolutely crazy and annoys the heck out of me.
why?
1) why do they do that?
and
2) why does it bother me? it sure the heck doesn't bother them?
Guess it helps me to learn that there are some things to make a fuss about and others to not worry about.... they had fun and made lots of different things all out of black/brown ugly Play-Doh 24-Pack of Colors. ;) They spent hours today just mashing it together and using their creativity which is really the most important thing - oh and a good amount of popsicle sticks will go a long way... not that I know this or anything!
I have to say that this was one of the best deals I've found because the containers are small and when they do combine them and they leave them open and they dry out I don't feel quite as bad about throwing them away. :) I also only let them each have one new color each week - so that maybe they might last a little bit longer than normal.
So what is the one thing that drives you crazy that at the end of the day really isn't that big of a deal?

New Month - New Coupons!
So I've discovered a really easy way you can help me out! :) I earn a small (very) small amount each time someone prints a coupon from the link below or from the right side button! You don't have to print many - just one coupon will credit my account. So if you're willing I'd appreciate you taking the time to print some coupons.... today is the 1st of August so new coupons have been released. You could print one today, one tomorrow, etc, etc, etc... :) And each day you print one I will receive credit.
Help a girl out would ya? I know this is a shameless plug but this blog is one of the few ways I have to bring in some extra money that allows our family to do special things. Thanks!

Sweet Deal!
Ok I get ahead of myself sometimes. My coupon buddy just called and we walked through this. There are a couple options, you can go through swagbucks and get the 1000 bucks which equals a $10 amazon gift card OR you can go through the link below and get a $10 credit but you can't use both the credit and the promo code. Which technically you could use the credit on your next box if you want/could..... Sorry. It worked me for and I got excited and now there seems to be issues. Sorry!
Receive a $10 credit when you sign up using my link below
Then use the code TAKEHALF to score half off your first box
Just go through my link below. Awesome deal for sure. And after you get your first box just cancel your subscription. :)

This would make a great gift just to have on hand for your gift closet!

A Tip to Expand a Meal
So in the past I would have cooked one package of sweet Italian sausage, sauteed some peppers/onions and served those for dinner. That would have been 5 sandwiches (normal amount of sausages in a package). And one really isn't enough so each of us would eat two, and then suddenly one isn't enough for leftovers and Nathan is eating the third. Well that's not exactly good for him and I would be upset that we used the whole package of meat for just one meal.
Then I had a thought..... what if I chopped up the sausage? So I removed the casings, chopped up the meat with my favorite Pampered Chef tool, cooked a much larger amount of veggies and voila - I had a huge skillet of dinner instead of five sandwiches. I normally just serve these in hot dog or hamburger buns. We were both able to eat a satisfying meal, plus had enough leftovers for two lunches. SCORE!
So this is one of my favorite tips for expanding a package of meat for meals. It saves money and the waist line. :)
Here's the tool that I use for almost everything, chopping hamburger, sausage, you name it and for only $11 it is so worth it!!! The Pampered Chef Mix N' Chop :)

Philly Trip Recap
I am finally getting around to posting about our trip to Philly. I am so thankful for this trip. While it was stressful and honestly I hate to travel (so I know where my children get it from) I am grateful for many reasons.
It really cost us nothing. My husband had to go anyway so the hotel was paid for. He gets mileage for driving his car, and per diem for meals that weren't included in his conference. With a little bit of planning and lots of organizing we found an Aldi's near our hotel when we got there and bought food for our breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. We did splurge one night for dinner out but even then we used a restaurant.com gift card (which I honestly don't think I would recommend - it was a lot of hassle and work for what it ended up being worth!).
I basically stayed in the hotel room with the kids and had a mini-vacation, I let them eat junk food, and watch lots of tv.... which never happens at our house. We do not have cable or dish at home so to be able to watch shows that were new to them was very exciting. Except they could not understand why I couldn't pause the shows when they had to use the bathroom like a DVD. ha! Then in the evenings after Nathan got home we would as a family go out and walk around down town Philadelphia. We went to City Hall, we visited a couple parks, got ice cream, and just let the kids enjoy the sites and sounds (we live in the country). I hope the kids remember this trip for the relaxed state we moved - no schedules, no timelines, no school, just went with the flow! Plus this hotel was awesome - The Windsor Suites. We will probably never find another hotel like it. It was HUGE and perfect for our family.
The one surprise we did plan on ahead of time (with a coupon of course) was taking the children to the Adventure Aquarium in New Jersey. It was so worth it. But even then with the coupon from Papa Johns we were able to save $20, and packed our own lunches to save even more money. If I'm not saving money I normally can't have a good time cause I'm worrying about the budget! yikes. They absolutely loved it. The first exhibit we went too were the hippos and to see the excitement and joy was wonderful - as my husband said 'This was worth it just to see their faces, and it's going to be really hard to go to the conference now!" but thankfully by mid-afternoon when he had to be back the kids were tired and ready for naps so we were able to leave as a family.
We did have one event that will stick out for awhile. One evening while out walking we decided to stop into MickyD's to treat the kids to a small vanilla cone and a small vanilla milkshake for us parents to share. Plus I had to use the restroom. Well the restrooms were looked so that was a bust, I ordered and paid. And waited, and waited, and waited.... 15 minutes later I asked where our order was (3 cones, 1 milkshake) - the lady's response 'just hold your pants mama, we'll take care of you in a minute'. um.. really. Stood back and watched the scene unfold. And older employee and a younger employee arguing over who had to make the cones cause neither one knew how..... seriously. Finally the older employee walks over and hands me two cones that the only way I can describe them is to say they looked like a wilted lily with all the petals hanging down over the sides - there was ice cream everywhere. It was a mess, I took one look and told her I couldn't eat them as an adult how was I to give them to my children (5, 3, and 1) to eat without making an absolute mess. Told her to keep my $6 I was out of there. (Mind you the wait was going on 20 minutes for a lady behind me who had ordered coffee). I am normally a calm and cool person but that was enough. So my husband went back inside to see if he could get our money back. She was still standing there holding the cones when he went back inside. He then told her to put them in a dish, so she did upright..... so turn them upside down so 1) they don't fall out of the dish, and 2) so we can eat them with a spoon cause by then the ice cream was running down the sides.... it was a total mess. Oh what an epic fail!
Ok... there's a couple of pictures for your enjoyment! :)

Coupons
One of my favorite ways to acquire coupons is to print them. That way I am only printing exactly what I need and don't end up with a large pile of unused coupons laying around.
Coupons.com is one of the best places out there to print coupons from. You can normally print each coupon twice from your computer or phone - each computer or phone if you have multiple.
Below are some links for a few *good* coupons :) There is a TON out there. I will be honest and say that I am an affiliate of this site so each time you print one of these coupons I earn a very very tiny amount... but hey if everyone does that I might get to buy a candy bar or something :)
$2.00 off two U by KOTEX Tampons
$0.50 off one Softsoap Body Wash
$3.00 off when you buy any one TWISTER Game
$0.50 off any 1 Palmolive Soft Touch dish liquid
$2.00 off Jergens Natural Glow Body Moisturizer
$1.00 off any two JOHNSON'S Baby Products
$2.00 off ONE Gillette Venus Family System Razor
$0.55 off any two (2) Hunt's Canned Tomatoes
BOGO SNICKERS Bar and Peanut Butter Squared Bar
And many many more.

Good Deals
I am so thankful for good deals... and the ability to find them. I know that sounds trite and a little generic but I am honestly so thankful for them. Life is expensive lately and it seems to be getting more expensive. And just when you think you've had a good month and might have some money left over something else happens - the microwave blows up, there's unexpected happenings at church, you have to throw away an entire box of little shoes cause you open it up and there's mold inside :(.... not that I would know anything about that right now.
With so many of these deals and shopping online it has been possible for me to stay home with my kids. Yes it's a lot of work sometimes but I feel that's the way I help contribute to my family is making those $$ stretch as far as they can.
Which is why I was thrilled to find this new site - Educents. I love daily deal sites and have gotten some amazing deals with them.... but to finally have one that is education based is thrilling!!!!
This is a new site and they launch April 2nd. And to spread the word they are offering up a FREE $15 gift card to anyone who signs up. Right now all the sign up is your name, email, and position in life (parent, teacher, grandparent, homeschooler, etc). Then in a couple minutes you'll receive the email with your confirmation, click that, then receive your gift card. Plus the more people who sign up the better deals they are going to be able to offer. Loving it!!!
So go sign up and then we'll have a post to share what great deals we were able to score cause boy homeschooling is not cheap!

One of the easiest ways I have found to tuck away a little extra money is with SavingStar. You can register here. Then you log all your store cards. Once you have done that. You 'clip' coupons depending on what you normally buy. The way it works is that stores send data to SavingStar letting them know what you bought - your account is then credited for the coupon amounts. What's great is these are on top of store sales and other coupons - so you can normally get a really great deal. I love to look at this money as extra/bonus money... and save it for a rainy day or cash it in right before Christmas to help with shopping!Plus right now they have an awesome contest going on. These are the sites I use to earn cash back on almost everything I shop for online. There are very FEW sites that don't qualify at one of these spots.
Ebates - Free $5 gift card after first qualifying purchase
Discover card - $50 in cashback bonus after your first purchase within 3 months!Shopping:
Here's a mystery shopping program that I love. This is a legitimate company as I and quite a few people I know use this one. One tip - if they ask you to pay to join - run away fast.
BestMark - Please put my shopper ID - PA7978 in the application as the person who referred you.
As a stay-at-home mom and a small blogger I am also always looking for ways to help increase our income. The above and below are my referral links that I earn a very small amount on. We use this money to pay off debt, pay it forwards to others, and save up for special treats. I am also an affiliate for Amazon, if you come to this blog at any point there is an icon to shop at Amazon and I look at it as a virtual tip that you are leaving me that doesn't come out of your pocket. ;)
Below are some other books that I like to recommend to fellow Christians/moms.... Both challenging and encouraging.
Called Home: Finding Joy in Letting God Lead Your Homeschool only 99cents
Simply Homeschool: Having Less Clutter and More Joy in Your Homeschool only 99 cents
Desperate: Hope for the Mom Who Needs to Breathe
Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream
Radical Together: Unleashing the People of God for the Purpose of God
In my *spare* time I contribute over at The Mommy Goods every Thursday or whenever I find a good deal and want to post it! 'Like' us on Facebook too to participate in fun discussions.

Why I LOVE Swagbucks!
My baby boy turned 2 almost 10 days ago. I can not believe it and am amazed everyday by my little boy. He is such a blessing to us.
And he is ALL boy... ha! He is obsessed with motorcycles. He loves them - really he loves anything that moves and has wheels. I found this adorable ride-on motorcycle and just knew he would love it. There was no question he was getting this gift - but I wasn't sure how we were going to pay for it......
I had almost forgotten about Swagbucks and how many I had accumulated so far. Did you know you can get a $5 e-Amazon card for only 450 points? So I started redeeming my points and before I knew it I had plenty to cover the entire cost of motorcycle.
If you don't use Swagbucks you need to start! You can earn points by taking surveys, daily polls, shopping, etc. The main and pretty much only way I earn SB is by searching the web. I downloaded the tool bar and use it every time I need to find something on the web - even if I know where it is - I probably search for 'facebook' eight times a day. :) But that's ok - it's a super easy way to rack up points.
Once you've accumulated 450 points you just start redeeming them for gift cards - you can only redeem 2 'like' rewards a day, and 5 'like' rewards in a month - so you do need to plan ahead for bigger purchases. But you can stack these rewards so it's not a problem at all to 'stock pile' them.
So make sure you sign up now and get started on earning some swag!
And no worries I will post a picture of my buddy opening his gift - I can not wait to see his face!
